The incident involved a tanker and a Citroen C1 vehicle.
The 21-year-old male driver of the Citroen suffered serious injuries and he was taken to James Cook University Hospital where he remains whilst receiving treatment.
Any witnesses to the incident or anyone who may have seen the Citroen prior to the collision or may have dash cam footage is asked to contact PC Lee Benson from the Cleveland and Durham Specialist Operations Unit, on the non-emergency number 101, quoting incident number 005860.
