At approximately 9.30am on Tuesday 13 October an alteration occurred between two women on a bus.
One of the women, aged 60, got off the bus on York Road and a short time later died.
Her next of kin has been informed and a Home Office Post Mortem will take place into the cause of her death.
The other woman, aged 26, has been arrested on suspicion of manslaughter and is currently in police custody.
A scene is in place at Coral Bookmakers on York Road and the bus has been taken away as part of the investigation.
Detectives are appealing to those who were on the bus and may have witnessed an altercation, have information or footage, to come forward.
Detective Chief Inspector John Bonner, from Cleveland Police’s Homicide and Major Investigation Team, said: “We are in the early stages of the investigation to establish what took place before the woman died and to establish the cause of her death.
“I am therefore keen to hear from anyone who was on the number seven bus at the time and saw two women having an altercation or perhaps has footage and information on what took place.
“From footage reviewed so far we believe a number of passengers tried to break up the assault.
“If you can help, no matter how small you think the information might be, please get in touch either by calling 101 or visiting our website quoting reference number 205074."
