Appeal for information as man left in critical condition following suspected arson

Detectives are appealing for witnesses and information as they investigate a suspected arson which left a man in a critical condition in hospital.
Emergency services were called at 11.20pm on Friday 22 May 2026 to reports of a fire at an address on Norfolk Street, Stockton.
Upon attendance, a man was located at the scene and was taken to hospital where he remains in a critical condition. Two other people were treated at the scene by emergency services and are recovering.
An investigation is ongoing and five people, three women aged 21, 32, and 52, and two men aged 26 and 29, were arrested in connection with the incident. All have been bailed with conditions pending further enquiries.
Senior Investigating Officer Superintendent Deb Fenny said: “We’re keen to speak to anyone who was in the area at the time of the incident, or who may have witnessed any suspicious activity in the vicinity before or after the fire.
“Please report information to us – no matter how insignificant it may seem, it could prove vital to our ongoing enquiries. We are also urging residents to review any available CCTV, doorbell footage, dashcam or other recordings which may assist the investigation.”
